- Galeazzo Ciano Speech in the Chamber of Fasces and Corporations. Account of the International Situation in Recent Years. Rome, Dec. 16th, 1939. (Documents of Contemporary History). Translated by C. M. Creswell. 6" x 8 1/2". 43 pages. This is the word-for-word speech given by Ciano, who was the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and also Benito Mussolini's son-in-law.
Ciano had been loyal to the fascist cause since he took part in the March on Rome in 1922, which marked the Black Shirts' rise to power in Italy. He was a member of the Fascist Grand Council which was Mussolini's inner circle of advisors. Ciano promoted an Italian alliance with Germany, and after Hitler invaded Poland and later when France fell to Germany, Ciano advised Italian participation in the war against the Allies - Great Britain, Russia and later the United States. However, after several defeats, Ciano wanted Italy to sign a peace agreement with the Allies. Mussolini disagreed and dismissed him as Foreign Minister. Mussolini was pushed out of power in 1943 with help from Ciano, and as a result he was captured by Pro-Fascist forces, charged with treason, and executed on his father-in-law's orders.
This is a fascinating, detailed speech, filled with historical facts and references, probably most of which are not familiar to the general public or the "layman". BOY, the history of countries and cultures, governments, alliances, wars, treaties and pacts is so complex, even as our current world is. The more I read and learn, the more I realize there are no simple explanations for most major occurances, and no simple quick-fix solutions, either. I'm sure very often bad decisions are made by well-meaning people, and then when intentional
lies and deceptions get thrown into the mix, there is even more confusion. And also, as we all know, so much
is based on people's points of view. It ain't easy! CONDITION: Pages are Excellent and covers are clean.
