    Description

We have for you a fine and historical plaque from Czechoslovakia (1924), commemorating a Czechoslovakian poet and essayist, J. S. Machar.   More on him below.
This plaque looks to be made of bronze; the metal plaque measures 152 mm x 111 mm.  It is a little loose, but still attached to a leather covered board which measures 270 mm x 200 mm.  The plaque bears a signature that I see often on items from Czechoslovakia, but I am unsure of who it is.  This is an original antique plaque from 1924.  It weighs between 1.5 & 2 pounds.  A very nice collectible in excellent condition.  Enjoy
    Machar, Josef Svatopluk
    (yô'zef svä'tôplook mä'khär)
    1854

    1942
, Czech poet and essayist. A leader of the realist movement in Czech poetry and a master of colloquial Czech, Machar was active in anti-Austrian political circles in Vienna. Many of his poems were satires of political and social conditions. In the poetic cycle
    The Conscience of the Ages
    (1901–21), of which
    Golgotha
was the initial volume, he contrasted antique with Christian civilization, favoring the former. His
    Magdalena
(1894, tr. 1916), a satirical novel in verse, concerns the oppression of women. Both Machar's use of colloquial diction and his brilliantly expressed skepticism greatly influenced Czech literature and public opinion.
